How it started…

The history of Phoenix Engineering dates back to year 1967 when the founding Company Phoenix Engineering & Development Sdn Bhd was established as a local trading company specializing in agricultural machinery at a time when agriculture was the mainstay of the state economy.

In the development of the agriculture industry in Sabah, Phoenix Engineering found a niche in the irrigation sector. Backed by an agency line from and working closely with an Australian pump company, and later an American company, the company founder was able to effect sufficient technology transfer to successfully propose, install and commission hundreds of irrigation and flood control pumping operations and plants throughout the length and breadth of the state of Sabah. The company was the first to introduce axial flow pumps into Sabah, then of Ornel brand in the 60’s. Then in the 70’s the company started distributing Batescrew pumps and trash screens in Sabah and in the 80’s this was supplemented with the MWI Hydraflo range.

The increase of tertiary trained engineering background in the company management in the early 80’s has diversified the field of company activities to water treatment. The increasingly professional application of engineering principles to the jobs of the company followed and it has also honed the wealth of company knowhow in mechanical and electrical systems in the water field accumulated over its three decades of operation.  The company has evolved to be a professional and reliable niche supplier of engineered solutions in water systems. The company while having added on several water product ranges to her product lines over the years has continued to maintain the cooperation with the pump companies from her pioneer days of over 30 years ago.

The product lines of the company are today streamlined to water related equipment and processes. Her market base is not just confined to the state of Sabah. Some of the company’s agency lines now cover the whole of Malaysia, and for one, we even sell to the Asia Pacific countries. Phoenix’s own Research and Development division has developed the Phoenix Portatreat range of portable water treatment plants, completely mobile and able to produce potable drinking water to WHO standards from the muddiest of river or well water.

Today, the company encompasses office and workshop cum factory in Kota Kinabalu. With a highly trained and specialized management and a core of skilled and on- the-job trained technicians with combined company experiences totaling over 100 years and stock of equipment and parts,   it stands as the Water Specialist company with the  most solid of foundations in systems and design know-how, job implementation, trouble shooting and maintenance and the facilities to tackle and complete projects on schedule in a long established tradition, out of state as in Brunei and Peninsular Malaysia.

Through the past 5 decades, Phoenix Engineering Sabah eventually found its niche in the market as a provider of engineered solutions in water systems in safe domestic water, domestic and commercial public water transfer, pressure boosting, domestic, commercial and public water features as in waterfalls, fountain systems, swimming pools, fish ponds and the like.

The future direction of the company is charted by the recent embarkation of a venture into manufacturing of pumps in Sabah, Malaysia.  While based mainly on our company expertise and know how and local labour, in partnership with foreign partners, the manufacturing venture will have secured enhancement of cutting-edge-technology prestige and marketing network to gain access to worldwide markets. The company has already acquired a 3-acre factory lot at the KKIP Industrial Zone.
